Volunteers Needed for John’s Island Branch Book Sale in July

Please see shifts below for the July Book Sale being held at the John’s Island Branch July 28-30. We offer many different volunteer positions throughout the weekend: cashier, book sorter, set-up, take down. Let us know if there is a job in particular you are interested in. Feel free to pass along to your friends. This would be a great sale to ‘learn’ from so we can be fully staffed for That BIG Book Sale in October!

Thursday, July 28 (Set-up) 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Thursday, July 28 (Member Event) 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Friday, July 29, 8:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m.
Friday, July 29, 1:00- 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 30, 8:45 a.m.- 12:15 p.m.
Saturday, July 30, 12:00- 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 30 (Take down) 4:00- 6:00 p.m.

We are currently in the most need of volunteers for the Friday shift 8:45- 1:15, Saturday 8:45- 12:15, and Sunday take down. While the Sunday take down shift isn’t very long, it is VERY necessary. We need to have all the books boxed up by 6 p.m. so the branch can continue to use their auditorium until a pick-up the following week.

John’s Island Branch Book Sale set for July 29-30, 2011

The Charleston Friends of the Library are proud to present That Summer Book Sale at the John’s Island Branch of the Charleston County Libraries. With great bargains, good books and a chance to support your library system, all are in invited Friday, July 29 & Saturday, July 30 at the John’s Island Branch, 3531 Maybank Highway, Charleston, SC 29455.

WHO: The Charleston Friends of the Library, a non-profit volunteer organization, raises money through book sales to help fund Library services, equipment, training, materials and public programming. The Friends collect and sort donated books for resale to raise money. This branch sale is one of the few book sales held throughout the year by the Friends.

WHAT: Books, DVDs, and CDs, will be available with prices starting at $1 for paperbacks and $3 for hardback books. Items include mysteries, romances, classics, children’s books, local histories, cookbooks and a variety of non-fiction topics.

WHEN:

Friday, July 29 from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 30 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Admission is free Friday and Saturday. A special event for Friends of the Library members will be held at the branch, Thursday evening, July 28 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

With great bargains, good books and a chance to support your library system, all are in invited Friday, June 17, Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19 at the Main Branch, 68 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401.

WHEN:

Friday, June 17 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 18 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Sunday, June 19 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Second Sunday Cart Sales

EVERY SECOND SUNDAY the Charleston Friends of the Library will be giving you more bang for your buck. Library discards will be available for sale at the Main Branch, 68 Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston, at the Information Desk from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Join us, every Second Sunday!

Our volunteers will have carts full of fiction and non-fiction for just $1 and $3 each. Hardbacks are $3 and soft covers are $1. Children’s books are marked at $0.50 and $1 each. Some authors include David Baldacci, Janet Evanovich, Lisa Scottoline, James Patterson, and John Grisham. Our non-fiction books consist of cookbooks, history, finance, and many more categories!

Author Nikki Giovanni to Speak for Charleston Friends of the Library Annual Meeting

Poet, activist, mother, and professor Nikki Giovanni will speak Sunday, November 7^th at the main branch of the Charleston County Public Library in downtown Charleston for the Friends of the Library’s Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting of the Board will be held from 2:30- 3:00 p.m. Nikki will talk to the crowd beginning at 3:30 p.m. After her presentation, she will do a Q&A session and stay around to sign books. Several of Nikki’s book titles will be available for purchase. Proceeds benefit the Charleston County Public Library.

The Charleston Friends of the Library meets once a year to vote on new board members and hold a regular meeting to discuss Friends’ items. Nikki’s presentation will be free of charge and open to the public.

Nikki Giovanni was born June 7, 1943, in Knoxville, Tennessee. While a student at Fisk University, she re-established the campus’s Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) Chapter in 1965. Over the span of thirty years, Nikki has received nineteen honorary degrees from colleges and universities; numerous achievement, humanitarian and recognition awards from government, private and public organizations including Woman of the Year for Ebony, Mademoiselle, Essence, and Ladies Home Journal magazines; YWCA Woman of the Year; Outstanding Woman of Tennessee Award; Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame induction; Distinguished Recognition Award, Detroit City Council; McDonald’s Literary Achievement Award for Poetry presented in the name of Nikki Giovanni in perpetuity; Outstanding Humanitarian Award, The House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Kentucky; two Tennessee Governor’s Award in the Arts and in the Humanities; the Virginia Governor’s Award; and two NAACP Image Awards for Love Poems and Blues: For All the Changes. Most recently, she was named the first recipient of the Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Award.
Nikki has been given the keys to more than a dozen cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, New Orleans, and Baltimore. The author of twenty-seven books, including the seminal Black Feeling Black Talk/Black Judgment, Nikki is University Distinguished Professor/English at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. She continues to read her work all across the country.
